Wireless fire alarms for HMOs
The Easy Way to Get Your HMO Alarm System Compliant
A wired fire alarm means cable runs through every room: chased walls, lifted floorboards and a round of making good afterwards. A wireless system does the same job by radio. The detectors, call points and sounders talk to each other, or to a control panel, without a cable between them, so the install is quicker, cleaner and far less disruptive.
That makes wireless the easy option for most HMO landlords. Tenants can stay in while we work, you don’t lose rent to a refurbishment, and there’s no redecorating bill at the end. A typical shared house is usually fitted in a day.
Wireless doesn’t mean second best. A radio-interlinked Grade D1 system or a wireless Grade A panel system meets BS 5839 in exactly the same way as a wired one, as long as it’s the right grade for the building and it’s installed and commissioned properly. We survey the property first, check the signal, and tell you straight whether wireless suits it. You get a commissioning certificate and a logbook, ready for your HMO licence inspection.
What the rules say
BS 5839-6 sets the grade and category of fire alarm a residential property needs, and nothing in it says the links have to be wires. A radio-interlinked Grade D1 system, or a wireless Grade A system with radio devices certified to BS EN 54-25, is fully compliant where that grade is what the property needs. What wireless can’t do is turn standalone battery alarms into a higher grade: those are rarely accepted in a licensed HMO. Your licence conditions and fire risk assessment set the grade, and we install to it.
Not sure which grade you need?
It depends on the size, layout and number of storeys. We'll confirm it at the survey, or you can read up first.

Wireless Fire Alarm Installers Across Hounslow & West London
We're based in Hounslow, so we're never far from your property. A lot of West London's rented housing is Victorian and Edwardian terraces and 1930s semis that have been converted into shared houses, and that's exactly where wireless saves the most hassle. Original cornicing in a Chiswick, Isleworth or Twickenham terrace stays intact, and a freshly refurbished HMO in Hounslow, Feltham or Hanworth can be brought up to standard without cutting into new plaster.
Whether you're applying for an HMO licence, the council has asked for an upgrade after an inspection, or you're simply replacing an old system, we'll survey the property, recommend the grade it needs and leave you with the paperwork the Hounslow and Richmond licensing teams ask for.
Outside these areas? We regularly work across wider West and Greater London, so get in touch.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are wireless fire alarms allowed in an HMO?
Yes, as long as the system is the right grade for the building. Radio-interlinked Grade D1 alarms and wireless Grade A panel systems both meet BS 5839 when they’re properly installed and commissioned. Standalone battery alarms are a different thing, and are rarely accepted as the main system in a licensed HMO.
How long does a wireless install take?
Much less time than a wired one, because there’s no cable to run and no making good afterwards. A typical shared house is usually done in a day, and tenants can stay in while we work. Larger buildings with a panel system take longer, and we’ll give you a clear timescale with the quote.
Is wireless more expensive than wired?
The equipment costs more, but you save on labour and on making good, so the total is often closer than people expect. In an occupied HMO or a period property it often works out cheaper overall. We’ll quote for whichever suits the building, and tell you honestly if wired is the better option.
Do wireless alarms still need power?
Radio-interlinked Grade D1 alarms still need a mains supply at each alarm, usually taken from the nearest lighting circuit, with a sealed back-up battery. Devices on a wireless Grade A system run on long-life batteries that need changing every few years, and the panel warns you well before they run flat.
Will wireless work in my building?
In most houses, yes. Thick masonry, concrete floors and foil-backed insulation can weaken the signal, which is why we run a signal survey before quoting and add repeaters where they’re needed. If wireless isn’t right for the building, we’ll tell you.
Which wireless fire alarm systems do you install?
We install and service the main wireless systems on the UK market: Aico RadioLINK+, EMS FireCell, Hyfire Taurus, Apollo XPander, Hochiki FIREwave, Zeta Wi-Fyre and Electro-Detectors Zerio Plus. We’ll recommend the one that suits your building and budget, and we can take over servicing of an existing wireless system, whoever fitted it.
Do I still need weekly tests with a wireless system?
Yes. Testing is the same either way: a weekly test recorded in the logbook, plus a periodic service by an engineer. A wireless panel also reports low batteries and lost signals as faults, so problems show up early. We can take the weekly tests off your hands with scheduled testing visits.
